Interior designer vs decorator: what is the practical difference?
The easiest way to separate the two roles is to look at whether the project needs planning and problem solving or mainly a visual refresh.

When decoration is enough
If the room works well but looks unfinished, dated, or disconnected, a decorating-focused approach may be enough. Furnishings, colour, styling, lighting, and decor can change the atmosphere significantly when the layout is already strong.

When design goes deeper
If the room needs better flow, custom storage, renovation planning, or more structural decision-making, an interior designer is typically the better fit. The role expands beyond appearance into the way the room functions and how different decisions connect to one another.
How to decide for your own project
Ask whether the space is mainly missing visual polish or whether it is actively getting in your way. If daily use is part of the problem, design usually needs to reach beyond surface styling. Our comparison page on designer vs decorator goes deeper into that decision.
