Getting started

Interior designer or decorator: what does your project need?

Choose help by the work your project requires. The title on a business card is only the beginning of the conversation.

The useful answer

Decoration typically focuses on furnishings, colour and styling. Interior design can include broader space planning and coordination, but individual scopes vary. For structural, permit or building-system work, confirm the qualified professionals and approvals your particular project requires.

When the room works but the look does not

If the layout suits you and the main task is choosing paint, rugs, lighting, furniture or accessories, a decorating or furnishing scope may be a good fit. Think about the outcome: a cohesive palette, better-scaled pieces, less visual clutter or a room that feels finished. Ask for the actual deliverables and sourcing responsibilities rather than assuming they come with the service title.

When the way the room works needs to change

If the project involves circulation, storage, kitchen layout, built-ins or coordination with a renovation team, ask about space planning and documentation. Understand the distinction between a concept sketch and a technical drawing. The provider should be able to explain the scope of their contribution and identify where other expertise is needed.

Check qualifications for the work

Titles, professional registrations and permitted scopes vary by jurisdiction. For work that affects structure, life safety, plumbing or electrical systems, confirm the appropriate local professionals and approval process. Do not rely on a general website description to establish that a person can sign or submit the documents your project needs.

Match the proposal to your brief

A smaller, carefully defined service may be more useful than a larger package with unclear responsibilities. Ask who measures the space, verifies specifications, coordinates trades, purchases items and resolves problems during installation. A clear answer to those questions is more valuable than a generic promise of “full service”.

A checklist to keep

  • List the decisions you need help with
  • Identify any layout or technical changes
  • Ask for specific deliverables
  • Confirm responsibilities and required qualifications
